Summer Fun Giveaway #3 - Felted Kitten

Can you share with us more about you and/or your family?

I live in Portland, OR, with my husband Jeff & our two daughters—Lexa, 6 & Samara, 3. I started making upcycled sweater play food/pin cushion cupcakes in April, 2009, after seeing some I really liked in a craft book I checked out from the library. I made the first batch of four for a birthday present for one of my daughter’s friends, sell them in a local Portland, OR, store called Black Wagon & had a booth at a few local craft shows last year and earlier this year. I currently don’t stock too many cupcakes on Etsy since they’re a tough sell (for me, at least) and have instead been focusing primarily on felt crowns. I recently started making banners as well and hope to branch out with a couple more products by the end of the year. I posted my first items on Etsy at the end of February, 2010, and feel like I’m still in ramp up mode. It can be a bit tricky working at home with younger children so most of the time I feel like I’m crafting in fits & starts. I’m working on trying to build momentum now so I can start dedicating more time to my craft when my younger daughter starts preschool in September.

What are you creating for your shop right now?

I’m currently focusing on adding more felt crown designs to my shop. My little miss cupcake pink felt crown was included on the Etsy finds craft party storque blog on June 16 which was a huge bonus for me and came the week after I made and listed a new crown a day for four days (the fifth being a bit later than planned). I’m currently working on a strawberry crown, a Snow white inspired crown (with matching banner), some superhero crowns, a pink & orange crown, and some new color combinations. I’m always on the lookout for great ribbon and love receiving color combination &/or thematic suggestions from people. I’m also hoping to create some more banners soon. Stay tuned!

What are some of your favorite summer items in your shop and why do you enjoy making them?

I recently designed & added the ladybug and bee the life of the party crowns which I think are really fun for summer. They remind me of warm summer days. I love the tactile nature of making felt crowns and the process of picking felt and ribbon color, deciding on how to embellish the crown (I’m loving polka dots and colorful gemstones right now) and how they all come together in the finished product.

Do you have any big plan for this summer?

I’m heading to Maui with the family for a week in July, followed immediately by family visiting from the East Coast, and a trip to Seattle for the Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners baseball series. Plus, I’ll continue to add as many new crowns & banner to my Etsy shop as possible.

Can you share a tip or two on how to have the most fun in the summer?

1) Always wear sunscreen; & 2) try to slow down and enjoy some of the simpler things about long summer days: swimming, going to the park, sitting on a blanket & picnicking with the kids, eating popsicles, hanging out with friends & family etc.
