EtsyMom Monday - Holly Sanford - Fiorella Designs

Are you looking for a new accessory to express your own unique sense of style with an eco-friendly twist? Etsy is truly known for being a marketplace full of innovative handmade finds, many of which are created from repurposed materials. Her Art
I create one-of-a-kind purses made from cigar boxes. Every purse I design is so personal to me, and is very hard for me to part with! I focus on themes that will allow women to express themselves. My favorite purses have a wine-tasting theme, where I incorporate materials like cork, distressed papers, and wine labels.

There are many steps involved in upcycling a used cigar box into a finished purse. Finding the most unique cigar boxes is the first step. They have so much character and are already beautiful on their own. From decoupaging the papers on, to finishing with a tassel and coordinating interior, there are many hours that go into the planning and process.

The Artist
I am fortunate to be able to work from home where I am able to watch my two sons grow each day. What began as a hobby has really begun to take off for me. My background includes sewing wedding dresses, interior design, and scrapbooking. My varied interests really come together in helping me create my purses. I am so passionate about what I do. There is no greater reward than to have other women love my designs the way I do!

Summer Fun Giveaway #3 - Felted Kitten

I think our readers will be so excited about this giveaway! Can you share with us more about you and/or your family?

I live in Portland, OR, with my husband Jeff & our two daughters—Lexa, 6 & Samara, 3. I started making upcycled sweater play food/pin cushion cupcakes in April, 2009, after seeing some I really liked in a craft book I checked out from the library. I made the first batch of four for a birthday present for one of my daughter’s friends, sell them in a local Portland, OR, store called Black Wagon & had a booth at a few local craft shows last year and earlier this year. I currently don’t stock too many cupcakes on Etsy since they’re a tough sell (for me, at least) and have instead been focusing primarily on felt crowns. I recently started making banners as well and hope to branch out with a couple more products by the end of the year. I posted my first items on Etsy at the end of February, 2010, and feel like I’m still in ramp up mode. It can be a bit tricky working at home with younger children so most of the time I feel like I’m crafting in fits & starts. I’m working on trying to build momentum now so I can start dedicating more time to my craft when my younger daughter starts preschool in September.

What are you creating for your shop right now?

I’m currently focusing on adding more felt crown designs to my shop. My little miss cupcake pink felt crown was included on the Etsy finds craft party storque blog on June 16 which was a huge bonus for me and came the week after I made and listed a new crown a day for four days (the fifth being a bit later than planned). I’m currently working on a strawberry crown, a Snow white inspired crown (with matching banner), some superhero crowns, a pink & orange crown, and some new color combinations. I’m always on the lookout for great ribbon and love receiving color combination &/or thematic suggestions from people. I’m also hoping to create some more banners soon. Stay tuned!

What are some of your favorite summer items in your shop and why do you enjoy making them?

I recently designed & added the ladybug and bee the life of the party crowns which I think are really fun for summer. They remind me of warm summer days. I love the tactile nature of making felt crowns and the process of picking felt and ribbon color, deciding on how to embellish the crown (I’m loving polka dots and colorful gemstones right now) and how they all come together in the finished product.

Do you have any big plan for this summer?

I’m heading to Maui with the family for a week in July, followed immediately by family visiting from the East Coast, and a trip to Seattle for the Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners baseball series. Plus, I’ll continue to add as many new crowns & banner to my Etsy shop as possible.

Can you share a tip or two on how to have the most fun in the summer?

1) Always wear sunscreen; & 2) try to slow down and enjoy some of the simpler things about long summer days: swimming, going to the park, sitting on a blanket & picnicking with the kids, eating popsicles, hanging out with friends & family etc.

And lastly the Sweetness Waterless Salt Scrub as you can exfoliate anywhere and not be greasy or even have to use water to rinse off!!!

Hi Etsymoms,

As previously communicated, we are looking to possibly moving our private forum to a new location. We have narrowed down to three possible sites for members to meet - Socialgo, Spruz or Yahoo (current site). Our goal is to have only one site for our members to communicate instead of having both the invision board and yahoo. This will eliminate the need for members to sign up for two sites and check both sites for team communications.

Some of the basic features that we looked for in the new sites are

*forum setting to allow for discussion topics & posting
*ability to email all members for team annoucement
*member profile page
*photo sharing, etc.

For the next few weeks we have made the two new sites - socialgo & spruz - public so that all members are welcome to sign up and give them a test drive. We will be posting a poll on yahoo group to allow you to vote which site you like most. The sites with the highest vote will be our future team site. Again, yahoo is still another one that we are considering so we could stay on yahoo if that's the preference. The invision board will be closed upon our migration.

I’m working on some crocheting patterns. I’m on Ravelry.com, and I’ve sold a couple there already.

What are some of your favorite summer items in your shop and why do you enjoy making them?

My *favorite* summer item is my Baby Hat and Sandals Set. I made a set for my baby, who loves playing with her toes, and also likes to go for stroller rides without squinting in the sunlight. Another summer item I like is the Pocket Solutions ™ Drawstring Backpack. It’s great for toting along the little necessities! I use mine all the time now!

Do you have any big plan for this summer?

This summer, we are living in Las Vegas for summer number 2 of my hubby’s internship. Other than that, I plan to watch my baby grow like crazy, and I’m going to be making some big projects (re-fitting a wedding dress and making two ballroom dance gowns).

Can you share a tip or two on how to have the most fun in the summer?

My best tip on having fun in the summer is to go swimming (but use a lot of sunscreen!), and watch a lot of movies while being with family and loved ones.
